Prayer Week 2, Day 7

Book The Essentials of Effective Prayer
Week 2, Day 7, pages 26-27
Scripture:  Psalm 91:1-9

What name is used twice in this passage to describe God?

El Elyon, the Most High

What other descriptions of God did you notice?

Almighty/Shadday
  • Giving of grace
  • Ability to supply the needs of His people

  • From Vine's:
The Abrahamic covenant was marked by a degree of closeness between God and the human participants that was distinctive in Hebrew history.  God Almighty revealed Himself as a powerful deity who was able to perform whatever He asserted.  But the degree of intimacy between El Shadday and the patriarchs at various stages shows that the covenant involved God's care and love for this growing family that He had chosen, protected, and prospered.

Lord/Yehovah, I am.

God/Elohim, plural of majesty

How would knowing these things about God help you in times of trouble?

The Names of God reveal His character, and a Person's promises are only as good as His character.  God's character in this Name, God Almighty/El Shadday, reveals His love for and care of His Body, the Church-- those who believe and follow Him as disciples.

Discuss how knowing God as the Most High relates to worship and how that might affect your prayer life.

God is set apart from all other gods, and our world today worships many self-centered gods that keep people in bondage and away from liberty:  religion, sports, government, body image, money-- to name a few.

Knowing that El Elyon/the Most High God is set apart from these gods that keep us in bondage and offer no liberty affects how I worship moment by moment and, therefore, how I communicate with/pray to God in sweet fellowship throughout the day.  I realize He is most high, not me, and I am a steward, not owner, of the gifts He gives.
