Prayer, Week 4, Prove the Will of God

I pray each of you finds at least one thing in the following word/Word study that renews your mind.

Prove/dokimazō (1381)

  • to test, examine, prove, scrutinise (to see whether a thing is genuine or not), as metals
  • to recognise as genuine after examination, to approve, deem worthy

Uses of prove/dokimazō (1381):

Miscellaneous uses:
  • This word can be translated as discern in Luke 12:56.
  • In Luke 14:19, a man wanted to prove (1381) his oxen-- in other words, to test or examine them and deem them worthy after examination.

How God proves:

God allows and encourages man to prove Him so He can reveal Himself for Who He is.
  • When your fathers tempted me, proved/dokimazō (1381) me, and saw my works 40 years. ~Hebrews 3:9

God tries/dokimazō (1381) our hearts.
  • But as we were allowed (1381) of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak ; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth (1381) our hearts. ~1 Thess. 2:4
  • That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried (1381) with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ. ~ 1 Peter 1:7

How we are to prove:

We are to examine/dokimazō (1381) our own selves.
  • 1 Cor. 11:28, 2 Cor. 13:5, Gal 6:4

We are to test the spirits, prove all things, and find out what is acceptable to the Lord.
  • Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try (1381) the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. ~1 John 4:1
  • Prove (1381) all things; hold fast that which is good. ~1 Thess. 5:21
  • Prove (1381) what is acceptable to the Lord ~ Ephesians 5:10

We are to read the Word.  The Law is a schoolmaster that leads us to TruthHimself (Galatians 5:24) so we can prove the will of God.
  • And knowest [his] will, and approvest (1381) the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law. ~Romans 2:18
  • From Vine's:  "The Jew knew God's will and mentally 'approved' of the things in which God had instructed him out of the Law."

How to apply what we have proved:

We can choose to refuse or not approve the will of God.
  • And even as they did not like (1381) to retain God in [their] knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient. ~ Romans 1:28
  • From Vine's:  One translation is "they refused" and "their refusal was not the outcome of ignorance; they had the power to make a deliberate choice; they willfully disapproved of having God in their knowledge."

We can be established in God's will.
  • So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves (1381).  Romans 14:22

  • In this passage "these things" relate to the food we eat.  The principle is don't make a big deal out of nothing and then condemn another who does make a big deal out of that thing.   We don't need to condemn ourselves once we have proved/dokimazō (1381) or examined something as genuine or disingenuous.

  • My 14-year-old daughter and I have been talking about this principle lately.  In a nutshell, if we dress a certain way because we want to belong to a certain group, then we are looking to that group (not to Christ) for our identity.  That heart motive is disingenuous.   So we need to test our heart motives, recognize what is genuine (where we find our identity based on our choices), and then not condemn ourselves because we know that God does not condemn those who find their identity in Christ.

How our choices will be proved:

Our works will be proved
  • His work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test (1381) the quality of each man's work. ~1 Cor. 3:13

Lord, thank You that, through our proving of Your will, You reveal Yourself to us. Establish us firmly so You can use us to further Your kingdom and so our faith might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.
